Michigan State University has nominated eight undergraduate students and one alumna for nationally competitive graduate school scholarships: the Marshall Scholarship, the Mitchell Scholarship and the Rhodes Scholarship.
All of the scholarships support students attending graduate school in the United Kingdom or Ireland.
The MSU nominees for the Marshall Scholarship are:
- Abigail Crick, a senior majoring in English in the College of Arts & Letters
- Audrey Drotos, an Honors College senior majoring in neuroscience in Lyman Briggs College and music in the College of Music
- Garrett King, an Honors College senior majoring in physics in the College of Natural Science
- Kaitlin Lenhard, a 2017 MSU graduate with a degree in global studies in the arts and humanities from the College of Arts & Letters and a degree in media and information from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences
- Eli Pales, an Honors College senior majoring in political science-pre-law in the College of Social Science and journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences
- Alexis Sargent, an Honors College senior majoring in social relations and policy in James Madison College
- Alexa Stechschulte, an Honors College senior majoring in comparative cultures and politics in James Madison College
Lenhard, Pales and Sargent have also been nominated for the Mitchell Scholarship.
Pales and Sargent have also been nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship along with:
- Sumaya Malas, an Honors College senior majoring in comparative cultures and politics and international relations in James Madison College along with Arabic in the College of Arts and Letters
- Taryn Stefanski, an Honors College senior majoring in physics in Lyman Briggs College
The National and International Fellowships and Scholarships (NIFS) Office, administered by the Honors College, helps interested undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international opportunities by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.
“This group of students has taken advantage of all that Michigan State University has to offer in terms of rigorous coursework, research and education abroad opportunities as well as co-curricular opportunities tailored to their individual interests,” said Cynthia Jackson-Elmoore, dean of the Honors College. “These awards are among the most competitive in the country, so to earn a nomination from Michigan State University speaks highly of these students.”
MSU has produced 18 Marshall Scholars, four Mitchell Scholars and 18 Rhodes Scholars.
The Marshall Commission provides support to approximately 40 of the most outstanding undergraduates in the country to study at any university in the United Kingdom.
The US-Ireland Alliance established the George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, which allows up to 12 future American leaders to pursue a year of graduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The Rhodes Trust, the oldest of the major international competitive award foundations, provides 32 of the most outstanding undergraduates in the country an opportunity to study at the University of Oxford in England.
