Michigan State University students nominated for twelve prestigious national awards

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State University has nominated undergraduate students for twelve prestigious national awards.

The MSU nominee for the Beinecke Scholarship is Britton Gustafson, an Honors College junior majoring in Anthropology, and History in the College of Social Science.

MSU has one nominee for the James C. Gaither Jr. Fellows Program: 

  • Qing Guan, an Honors College senior majoring in International Relations, and Social Relations and Policy in James Madison College; and Economics in the College of Social Science 

MSU’s nominees for the Goldwater Scholarship are: 

  • Bailey Bowcutt, an Honors College junior majoring in Microbiology in Lyman Briggs College 
  • Calista Busch, an Honors College junior majoring in Genomics and Molecular Genetics in Lyman Briggs College 
  • Samuel Sottile, an Honors College junior majoring in Advanced Mathematics in the College of Natural Science 
  • James VanAntwerp, an Honors College junior majoring in Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering 

MSU’s nominees for the Truman Scholarship are: 

  • Elyse Baden, an Honors College junior majoring in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy, and Social Relations and Policy in James Madison College; and Interdisciplinary Humanities in the College of Arts and Letters 
  • Ishaan Modi, an Honors College junior majoring in Social Relations and Policy in James Madison College; and History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Science in Lyman Briggs College 
  • Gabriel Sandoval, an Honors College junior majoring in Comparative Cultures and Politics in James Madison College; and Public and Professional Writing in the College of Arts and Letters 
  • Avery Tilley, an Honors College junior majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources; and Genomics and Molecular Genetics in the College of Natural Science 

Baden and Tilley are also nominees for the Udall Scholarship. 

The National and International Fellowships and Scholarships (NIFS) Office, administered by the Honors College, helps interested undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international awards by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.  

The Beinecke Scholarship provides funding for graduate school for college juniors intending to pursue a research-focused graduate program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. 

The James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program is a paid one-year research internship at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for approximately 12 graduating seniors or recent graduates. 

The Goldwater Foundation seeks sophomores and juniors committed to a research career in STEM fields with the potential for significant future contribution in their chosen field. The award provides funding for approximately 51 students for undergraduate tuition and living expenses.  

The Truman Scholarship Foundation recognizes students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to affecting change through public service. The Truman Scholarship provides financial support for graduate study and leadership training for approximately 62 students. 

The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or the environment. Each year, the foundation awards up to $7,000 for educational expenses to approximately 55 outstanding students in the United States.
